NEEDS AND DREAMS:
Some of the needs that have been identified for the school and its teachers.
1) I think most of you are aware of the many leaks in the roof of the school.
One of the most pressing needs is a new roof. A budget for this is being put together but we believe at a minimum this will cost $7000. Some of you have experienced the wet sleeping bag in the morning syndrome. We hope to eliminate this problem this year.
2) Water problem. You all remember very well the problems the school encounters with having water during the day. As it turns out there are four different zones in the town that receive water from four different tanks. The one the school is connected to has not proven to be reliable during the day. A solution would be to build a small water tower on which we would place a 2000 liter tank which would supply water during the hours of peak use. The leadership at the school will put together a proposed budget for this.
Money has been donated to purchase a cistern and pay for the tower on which to place it. It's moving slowly, but it will be accomplished. 7/15/07
3) Thought is being given to the possibility of building additional room space directly above
where we all sit down to eat. This would house a library which would be moved from the
first floor to the second.
4) Additional land purchase. There is a lot across from the school which is available for
sale. This would be a great lot for the school to have instead of just using that small lot
right behind the school. We think this property can be purchased for $10,000. Yes land
prices are soaring in Salquil. This mostly has to do with families having members illegally
being in the states and sending money back to Guatemala. This situation is driving up
prices in many rural areas of Guatemala.
